I've worked at Bank of America, so I can tell you what I garnered from that experience:
#1: The customer is not always right, and you don't have to do everything they say. If you can't proceed with a transaction, you can't proceed. Tell the customer that, and if they argue, get the manager. Remember that people get cranky when they can't get access to their money.
#2: Customers will almost always argue about fees (overdraft, etc). Just stick to your guns. And if that fails, get the manager.
#3: If you close, realize that you will likely never be out on time. Out of courtesy, most banks stay open ten minutes after they close for late customers. This will keep you in the banking center even later than scheduled, so don't plan anything immediately afterwards.
#4: At our banking center, we had extra roles such as Employee Satisfaction or Meeting Coordinator. Do not volunteer for the positions unless you are planning on moving up through the company. When a later employer calls to check references, the bank will most likely say that you were a "teller" and mention nothing of the extra roles.
#5: Research your customers. Customers don't care if you are new, they just want to have their transactions handled in a way that they are used to being handled. For example, Mr. Johnson never shows his ID because he's banked with you for 50 years. Don't even ask him, or you'll find yourself with an earful.
#6: All else aside, customers sucks. They are always looking for a way to blame you for something. To see more, you can check out the following: http://wellsfargosucks.com/ , http://www.bankofamericasux.com/ , http://www.wachoviabank-sucks.com/ , and so forth.
#7: Best of luck! Remember, you are a bank teller and not the president of the bank. People will take their frustrations out on you, but you have no control over bank or federal policies.

Count any cash going in or out of your drawer at least 3 times! I guarantee the first time I had to take an offage I didn't understand how it happened and the only thing you can do accept it and learn from it. At the CU I work at we write how much cash we get or give right on the top of the receipt, that way if you are off later in the day you have a double check that you gave out that amount of cash.
People will get angry when they overdraft, especially with the high usage of debit cards. You will get very used to explaining to people how a debit transaction goes on hold until it clears out of the account and that's probably why they bounced a check, etc.
Just smile, be happy and when they ask if you're handing out any free samples, just laugh no matter how many millions of times you will hear that!

It doesn't matter how bad a day you are having...always smile at the customer, you will have to work with them every day so be nice. Keep your work space clean always, that is especially important in banking. Don't stress the selling aspect of the job...just remember you are suggesting products your customers don't know the bank offers. Banking is a changing industry...try to keep abrest of what is going on so that when it is time to move up you know what is going on in your industry. Study the regs A LOT, know them like the back of your hand...they are your friend. A customer can argue and argue but if you understand that Reg CC only allows you to make the 1st $100 available of the check your customer has presented there isn't anything you can do but be nice and try to educate your customer. Keep abrest of the current scams going on so that you can know what you are looking for in regards to checks being deposited!

If they ask you to help sell things by mentioning various products and services to the customers, be sure to do that. Be accurate, friendly, and careful. Don't go over your drawer limits. If you are supposed to get an okay from your manager for a certain transaction, then get their initials on it.
