Factoring Trinomials

Since the last term (+42) is positive, the signs in the parentheses have to both be the same.

Since the middle term (-13x) is negative, the signs in the parentheses both have to be negative.

So you have something like (x-a)(x-b)
where a*b = 42 and (-a -b) = -13.

The factored version of the equation turns out to be:
(x-6)(x-7)

Hope that helps!

(x-6)(x-7)

Think about it this way. What 2 numbers add up to -13 and multiply to get 42. -6 and -7. And since theres no coefficient on the x^2, it's just an x

x^2-13x+42

= x^2-6x-7x+42

= x(x-6)-7(x-6)

(x-6)(x-7)

Check this by applying the foil method which would give you:
x^2-6x-7x+42
x^2-13x+42

What factors that make 42 also added or subtracted make -13 is what u should ask yourself.
negative six and negative seven.
(x-7) (x-6) the problem has two roots both six and seven
