The Legend: One of the actors portraying a Munchkin in the film hung himself from the branch of an apple tree during the shooting of the scene in which Dorothy and the Scarecrow discover the Tin Woodsman. The shot was left in the finished film and, although the Munchkin's demise takes place in the blurry background, his ill-timed final act can be seen by viewing the frames of the shot individually or in slow motion.

The Facts: There were no suicides on the set of The Wizard of Oz. There is some strange, out-of-focus movement discernible in the background trees during the scene in question, but it is neither a suicide in progress nor, contrary to what some have suggested, a bumbling crewmember accidentally caught on camera. The moving object in the background is, in fact, a live bird – one of many borrowed by MGM from The Los Angeles Zoo to give the movie's "exterior" shots a more realistic feel.

Yes. An actor did not get the roll during the lollipop gill scene and decided to commit suicide on set. The enhanced version of the DVD of The Wizard of Oz is edited so that the hanging little person appears to be a bird flapping it's wings.

I saw a TV show on TV land last year about this. It wasn't a munchkin hanging himself, it was some guy on a ladder working on the set. They showed a close up of it. Also they interviewed an original munchkin and he said the hanging never happened.

Yeah they were part of the set, the set designers thought the forest looked bare and fake, since it was on a soundstage. So they borrowed several exotic birds and animals from the zoo to fill it out and give it a realistic feel. The supposed hanging man that can be seen in the forest in actuality is a large bird flapping it's wings.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs: There is no stage hand on set at the end of the Tinman sequence, nor was anyone hanged, nor did they fall out of a tree. The shadowy figure at the back of the set as Dorothy, Scarecrow and Tinman set off down the Yellow Brick Road is a large bird stretching its wings.

Nothing more than an urban legend. It's actually the shadow of an ostrich that was on the set for the scene.

Complete urban legend. There is a shadow, but if you look closely it is a bird...like an ostrich or something.

Wow. I've heard of this one. Yeah I heard that happened and I spent like an hour looking through my version for it but apparently it was edited out of newer versions (if it's real that is.) I think it's kinda gross but interesting too.

I think I found a link to it possibly but you can't really tell if it's real

It's not a person; It's a bird

It's a children's movie; I don't think anyone in their right mind would put someone hanging themselves
