I was wondering why suddenly our country now uses terms like "Patriot Act", "Homeland Security" etc.., and does so at a time when we seem to be in period of perpetual war (war on terror), and a period when we seemingly approve of torture, warrantless surveillance, denial of habeus corpus, extreme exectutive privilege, and impenetrable government secrecy....while at same time the economic playing field is such that we have record high gas prices, and record budget deficits, record trade deficits, and record foreclosures. What is happening? Sometimes feels like I am watching early 1930's film clips.

The words you list have been around for at least 4-5 years.

Your comparison to gas prices, deficits, etc, is laughable. We've declared war on the "n" word and gas prices have shot up....you find a correlation there, too?

At it's most basic, a black hole can be considered as the gravity source left behind when a massive star collapses under it's own weight. As an entity, it is still subject to the laws of gravity, and behaves in much the same way as did it's progenitor star. What it is not is a hole in anything. In fact, the essence of a black hole is a dimensionless point of infinite density which we call a singularity (actually physicist-speak meaning we don't really know). What most people refer to as a black hole is actually the event horizon. This is a region at which point the escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. It is not a physical entity. There is nothing too complicated about the formation of a stellar mass black hole. In fact, it is the inevitable consequence of a massive star collapsing under it's own weight. The diameter of the event horizon is dependent upon the mass of the black hole. The "whirlpool" illustrations you may have seen are an attempt to portray these objects to a lay readership, but are not really true representations of the objects. Don't worry about you imagination! Without one I wouldn't be a physicist!

I, myself do not like either one of these entities! I think they abuse the power they have, but shouldn't have in t he first place!
I feel that these two agencies steal more, and more of our rights every day!
Innocent people are subjected to their abuse of power each day! They are detained without due process, and held for however long the authorities want! This is so wrong, on so many levels! but it occurs all the time. especially if they are dark dark skinned and are of Eastern descent!
The fact of racial profiling is criminal!! And that it is socially acceptable is to me, unconscionable!
And what the Bush Administration has done as far as breaking the law, and then calling it executive privilege is so far out in right field, it is totally believable! I just wonder how the Rep neo-cons are going to work it all out so that in the end, they can blame all of it on the Lib/Dems! And trust me, they will find a way! They are so creative!
The state of affairs this country is in right now scares me! It is like being in the middle of some horror picture made in the 1930's! We are like little children, being told fairy tales, and we believe the monsters are real! Well, some of them are real, but not all of them are real, we just need to learn to tell the difference!

Recall that prior to the 'perpetual war' of the War on Terror there was the War on Drugs, the War on Poverty and the Cold War. 'War' is a common metaphor in American society, and it seems we never tire of being at 'War' - real or alagorical.

The neocons are so used to such nonsense that they have to promote fear at every turn.

Now that they no longer have the big boogie man of communism to threaten us with, radical Islamists will have to do.

Still waiting for the dominos to fall...

whether any of us like it or not, there are terms being used by our gov't now that are so like those used in germany when adolph h was coming to power and during his attrocities he placated the german people with this kind of language....i'm a political aetheist myself but i watch and see what is happening in this country....if you add it all up i'm afraid we may already be circling the drain...so to speak, and i worry so for my grandkids and theirs! i think people are not getting the bigger picture of what's going on

It is called "doublespeak", and is very well delineated in "1984", by George Orwell. This administration wrote the manual on using it.
