As long as there are free handouts, there will be people who abuse the system. The welfare system should be abolished in its current form.
There are really three types of "welfare" - unemployment benefits, social security, and welfare (food stamps, etc.). Unemployment should have a reasonable time limit for benefits that would allow a person to get another job. Social Security should be limited to elderly and disabled. Not much change in those areas. Welfare should have to be earned. There are many low level government jobs that could be done by people on welfare to "earn" the money they receive. Some examples are to keep roadways and rivers clean, work in state and federal parks or government buildings, etc. Some of the people on welfare could serve as daycare for the others. If people were required to work for their welfare check at minimum wage, there would be less people standing in the welfare line.
This type of system would allow those who really need the help to get it and discourage the ones that just want a free ride.

What makes you think the people buying the items that you saw were fully capable of working, just because they were buying those items? How do you know that they haven't been scrimping and saving, just so that they could give their kids an occasional treat, a once in a blue moon nice meal, or a birthday cake? The stories that people hear of seeing people buying cart loads of gourmet food and luxury items with public assistance tend to be apocryphal. Yes, there are people who abuse the system, and get what they don't deserve, but the vast majority of those on public assistance are people who truly need the help, and generally they only need it and get it for a limited time. I see no reason to tell these people that because the taxpayers are helping them through a tough time that they must live as miserably as possible.

Democrats and Republicans now adays are becoming more and more alike. They don't care about welfare. They are building our government to be more and more socialist all the time, so that the government takes care of us cradle to grave.
I am tired of my tax dollars paying for these peoples housing while Mexicans are running across the border to get free health care.
Our leaders are trying to dumb us down so that they can create the North American Union with U.S. Canada and MExico and make us one huge country to compete globally and work for competitive wages on a global market. This is bad.
I am voting for Ron Paul, he doesn't support things that aren't stated in the Constitution.
He will eliminate the IRS, and get us out of Iraq immediately.
Unfortunately all other leaders even those with a "plan" to set up checkpoints aren't telling you they are CFR members and can take decades to get us out of Iraq.

Where do you live ??? I live in Florida, where it is very tightly regulated. No bakery items, no alcohol, no candy.... You can buy steaks if you can afford them and chips as well, I guess.
Why are you so tight fisted and angry?
There may be some fraud and abuse in the welfare system where you and I live, but it pales in comparison to the fraud, waste and abuse which comprises much of what goes on in Washington, DC.
A person on food stamps, by the way, gets a maximum of $149 to live on for a month. Try partying and eating steaks on that !

Some items are not allowed. For example, one cannot go to McDonald's or Burger King with food stamps. One cannot buy things like paper products, shampoo or car parts. It has to be edible. I would agree to a certain extent that the money could be used better in some instances. Many people are unaware food stamps can be used to purchase vegetable seeds to grow their own food, thereby extending the monies they receive by growing a garden. Unfortunately, many people on food stamps lack a place to grow extra. There is a cap on benefits according to the size of the family. Now, in many places, if one becomes pregnant while on assistance, it does not automatically increase their benefits. I think it depends on the state one is in. Go here to see rules governing food stamps:

Are these people buying food for the month? Could that be why it looks like alot?
From what I hear you only get $20 something dollars a week per person for food from food stamps.
Nobody gets rich on welfare. You have no idea if there are kids or elderly on the other end of that foodcart.

Because the system is so open to abuse.
Were it *MY* system, they'd get 90 days...I'd pay everything: their rent, their food bill, hell, even their credit card bills.
After 90 days, they sink or swim on their own. If they can't, shuck-e-darns.
