The recent rains have probably messed it up, but its usually pretty brown and muddy anyway. The answer is the Mississippi river. If you've evern been to New Orleans, you will see the water there is muddy too. Galveston is still close enough to the mouth of the Mississippi that a lot of the mud getting washed into the gulf is still floating around Galveston. It starts looking better as you get farther south along the coast like Corpus Christie and eventually gets pretty nice around Padre Island.

I was just there this weekend also and its mainly because of the recent rain. The flooded rivers in Texas have recently been dumping their water into the Gulf, muddying up the Gulf. Galveston does not normally have very clean and clear water, but this weekend and now is especially bad. Even about 25 miles off shore the water still was not as clear as usual.

Recent rains have probably made it worst but the main culprit is the ship channel. The huge tanker's propellers stir up the silt for miles. I heard something about plans for them to dig a huge trench that was supposed to prevent this in order to clean up the beaches to encourage tourism in the area and improve marine life. I believe it was deemed too expensive for the time being though. The research on it is pretty compelling. I hope they do it eventually.

Because Galveston is part of Houston, and that's what they get for trying to be like Long Islanders.

Welcome to the gulf coast. Not all of Texas beaches are like this. It's just Galveston bay..further south the coastlines start clearing up.

Its been like that for years. Once upon a time I use to venture into the water but you couldn't pay me to go in there now!

All of the currents also add to the lack of clarity of the water.

They say its because the rivers pour into around there and stir up mud.
