If you were the Ruler of the Earth would you rather be Feared or Respected?

I'm going to have to side with Machiavelli on this one. To quote:

"Every one understands how praiseworthy it is in a Prince to keep faith, and to live uprightly and not craftily...

"Be it known, then, that there are two ways of contending, one in accordance with the laws, the other by force; the first of which is proper to men, the second to beasts. But since the first method is often ineffectual, it becomes necessary to resort to the second."

Respect is better than fear. But sometimes respect doesn't work. You hope for the first, but settle for the second if you must.

If I were the ruler of earth I would want to be respected. I think when your respected you have a chance of actually being something and being remmbered as a good ruler instead of a tyrant.
I think that when your feared nobody will be kind to you and you wont have any friends.When you need help at your weakest moment the people who once feared you would gang up on yyou rather then helping with care.
If you were a respected ruler then you you would be cared for and treated kind and chances are people wouldnt think of you as the enimie.You would have the power but you also wouldnt let greed take over your whole jodgment.
Being a respected ruler is being a good ruler.

let's face reality. no one can rule the earth by being respectable alone. to rule 5 billion reasoning humans you must instill in them fear and subservience. in other words you must project the air of a god-like being. if i were that ruler, i would easily choose to be feared and i'd exploit that to good use by destroying all the terror groups and corrupt capitalists and government officials and leading the rest of humanity to an era of peace and prosperity

A little bit of both...I would want to me mean enough so that no one would dare try to overthrow me ...but at the same time, be nice to gain the respect and trust from all my people. It's finding the right balance that's the trick. :)

"Respected",without a doubt!Fear might work in the short ttrem,but it usually breed fear and that breeds hatred.if you hav your act together you don't need people to fear you,it's an ugly feeling to have the knolwedge that for all your power,people,at heart really hate your guts!Respect.definitly!
