I have a central air conditioning system. We left it on last night with the windows open (by mistake) and then switched it off after 3 hours. The A/C now doesn't work anymore. Could leaving the window open (it was relatively cool outside) have conked the compressor, or any other part of the unit.

Your problem is purely coincidental. Your AC system has no idea whether your windows are open or closed. All it knows is that it continues to run until the temperature at the thermostat is satisfied.

Being a licensed contractor, my suggestion would be to get a company that you feel comfortable with to take a look at it.

Don't assume that it is always the compressor. There are a lot of components within your system that could fail. It is highly possible that it could be your capacitor has blown, maybe a fuse that has blown, or pressure switch that has tripped. All relatively inexpensive repairs.

If you do not have a regular service company, then poll your friends and family members to see who they have worked with and trust. If no luck there, you can visit the Air Conditioning Contractors of America website at www.acca.org and get a listing of qualified contractors in your area.

And, if you are like me then you like to get as much information as possible. So, go to www.howellsac.com and you can download our FREE HVAC Energy Tips.

I hope that this has helped. If you need more info, you can contact me through our website at www.howellsac.com. It's not everyday that you can pick the brain of an HVAC guy without having to spend a dime.

Leaving the window open would not do this.

Check the fuse box to make sure power is on. Make sure the thermostat is set to cool and the thermostat shows the actual room temperature hotter than the cooling set point.

NO!! In no way would that cause the compressor to fail!! it sounds like you may be low on freon. it sounds like the compressor has kicked out on low limit!! it can be bypassed.... but better have freon checked!!

it could be as simply as the connections outside they will get old and dirty and loose the proper connection.
