I recently had an audition with a band and was told they want someone with more experience. It's a little hard to take because I've always gotten positive feedback on my drumming, and I consider drumming to be a part of my identity. Of course I have only been playing about 4 and a half years, so I'm no seasoned professional. It just feels kind of rotten to get turned down. Any one have similar experiences, drummers or other musicians? How did you keep the rejection from getting you down?

Certainly, I've been turned down before. It is going to happen. No matter who you are or how good you are, someone out there will have a different idea of your abilities. It is more a matter of finding the right match of musicians than being a good drummer or a poor drummer. Just turn it around, you may audition for a band and decide that you don't want to join them. Not because they are a poor band but because the fit wasn't there.

Hey, its happened to all of us and it's no big deal. No drummer is right for every job, and not every job is right for you.
Its cool you're usually getting good feedback, that means you're doing something right. If a band says they're going with someone with more experience, just take it as that. You can't fake experience and you can't rush it either, you've just got to do your time.
I have the attitude that if I'm supposed to get the gig, I will. If I don't get the gig, it means I wasn't supposed to get it. Another gig ALWAYS comes along.
Just keep trying to be your best - be better today than you were yesterday, be better tomorrow than you are today - that's how you get past the bad times and prepare for better ones to come.

Now go practice or something....

There isn't a musician out there that hasn't gotten turned down at one time or another. Even the big guys were turned down more than once before they hit the big time.

Continue to practice. As always look for that extra something which can give your performance an edge. Make yourself stand above the others.
