The construction of the USS Monitor. When she was completed, the world's wooden warship fleet was instantly obsolete.


By the way, the CSS Virginia (ex USS Merrimac) and the submarine H.L. Hunley were Confederate craft.

That would be the steam powered revolving turret on the USS Monitor, England and France had Ironclads before we did however with this invention it paved the way for wooden ships to be more obsolete than they were before

that's when we invented the armored ships Merrimack and Monitor. I can't give sources but this is common history. when those two ships fought it marked the end of the wooden ship era and the start of the modern navy.
