I have a child from a previous marriage, and may be getting married again in the future. If I am concerned about what should happen in the event of my death, should I draw up a prenuptial agreement before I get married, or just draw up a will?

In all honesty I would do both.
The will clearly states what your wishes are as to who gets what you leave behind. The prenuptial prevents the new husband from collecting on behalf of your untimely death and cutting your children out from what is rightly theirs.

Right now I would have a conversation with the other parent as to what the wishes would be if such a circumstance comes to place. Once that is agreed upon I would have a will place with your wishes and also draw up a agreement with a lawyer of what you both decide what would be best for the child.

A prenup basically protects your assets. It says that when
I leave this marriage, be it by death or divorce, what was mine at the start will still be mine.

You should be okay with a will, except if you are worried about getting divorced and that your wife will earn some of your assets. If you stay married, beyond any laws, your estate is divided as per your will.

Both might be best, but in some states if you are married(community property states) The law states that anything you accumulate(you and your spouse) Is half his and half hers. Anything you have before you get married may be put in a prenup.

If you're worried about what will happen if you die then you should write a will to make sure that your child is provided for. A pre-nup is only going to come into play if you get a divorce.

The will is going to be more effective in getting your wishes overall carried out and less liable to be challenged.
