it is pretty easy for me to express myself without resorting to insults you @#$%^&*! Just kidding! The thing is that people feel passionately about politics. Like religion, that is why it has been said to avoid those type of topics in social situations. Here goes. To oversimplify, Democrats seem to believe that government has the solution for all the problems. And that if the government has not yet fixed a problem it is because the bureaucracy in place is underfunded and not large enough. Republicans tend to believe that a little government goes a long long way. and that there is no problem that more government will not make worse. Take education. Republicans would like to bring competition to the market through more charter schools, or vouchers for private schools. The Dem's are against it. they believe the only problem with education is it is underfunded.. MO MONEY, MO MONEY. This is like the very first time that schools actually have LESS money than the year before. Yet the school administration talks about cutting the kids programs, never considering that maybe they have too many layers of management. As I said, except for this year, Schools have NEVER had MORE money than they have and Education has NEVER been worse. This is the best I can do. You have asked us to be unbiased while discussing the most polarizing of issues. You can tell by what I said which way I lean, but I believe I stuck to the facts.

If you ask me, both dems and republicans only give it lip service. Just look how many countries we trade with that have egregious human rights violations; China, Saudi Arabia. As long as the money flows everyone is content to look the other way.
The sad part is, anytime someone has the moral fortitude to stand against it they're labeled as a bigot for not being compassionate to other cultures.
As for Guantanamo, you people need to do a little research. The detainees don't fall under the Geneva convention because they were not a part or party of the signers of it.
If they were, however, then they could be tried under a war crimes tribunal for violating said convention by conducting attacks without identifying themselves as enemy combatants through the use of uniform or insignia. During WWII many prisoners were tried and summarily executed for violating this same article.
Just a little food for thought, the US is well within it's rights to do much worse to them then what's being done. If you don't like it then stop complaining about inapplicable treaties and push your representatives to pass new legislation that would actually apply to this situation and would prevent such actions in the future.
Last, don't try to pull us troops into this debate. The reason our healthcare sucks is because Clinton slashed our budget so bad in the 90s and Republicans are still trying to bring it back to where it should be.

'blueridge' - Mark B. here - I'm with you so far.
I'm Canadian, but well versed in your politics - so now you know.
I'm also, here in Canada, a dyed-in-the-wool (L)iberal, as in The Liberal Party of Canada. Closest thing you're gonna get to a Democrat north of our border that we share.
Unfortunately, we've got a (C)onservative(Bush-prone 'poodle-lackie') Prime Minister - Stephen(Steve - to 43) Harper.
As his gov't is a slim minority(our system), it's quite possible that we can get rid of him in the next election. That could happen within the next year or less - hopefully.
Then our Liberal Party would be rightfully again our gov't and hopefully be able to work properly with a Democratic admin. in the USA to 'Clintonize' the world's view of the USA.
'Nuff said. Welcome aboard. I can't say how often I'll be here, 'cause I just got back on recently after a month. Sick and tired of the 'homework' dudes. School's out - hopefully they'll crawl back into their holes until Sept(forever ??).
By the way - I'm 62 yrs old, married(second time - 28 yrs) - male, for sure - no pseudonym 'Mark B.' to throw people off.
I'm a 'straight shooter', and accept your invitation. I hope it works out.
'gman' - thanks for the 'space'.
I saw JFK give that famous speech on tv live in 1961.
You've read the above, I thanked you for the 'space' and now I will sign off without being a 'combatant' of yours, as I've used you a little.
Thanks again - Mark B.

We've come a long way from JFK and the pride we had as a decent people of America. Our spirits have been broken by an administration of defiance and secrets from the people, lies to the people, and shameless "empire building". Bush thinks he is King! Only impeachment will show the world, REAL AMERICANS don't agree with crimes against humanity, and a lawless President. I believe once he is gone our pride will be restored. Right now we are wounded by shame caused by Bush's policies.

99% of today's young Dems have never heard it... but for a quick B/W soundbite that they vaguely recall is played on TV news around his birth/death-days... are people volunteering to that degree? (no)... do they give, more than they want? (are you kidding me)... but seriously, you have to know that the speech was BS then, and many people today have greater-tuned BS meters today, at that.
Frankly, there's not a Dem that's volunteered or accomplished much (themselves) that's running or ran, now and in the recent past. Is Nancy Pelosi or Hillary the poster-girl for inner-city education? are they marching, giving of themselves, selfless? (how loud do you want to laugh?)... BUT, this isn't to say that the GOP is any better. Young people are led by the "branding" of the Two Parties -- which is reinforced by our TV, movies (Al Gore, sheesh) which slant everything one way or another, black or white, with us or against us... and inspire nothing, not even an original thought or the desire to explore or investigate.

Democrats seem to overlook human rights issues when they are in the minority, and the Republicans are in power. They put human rights on the back burner and criticize the acts of the president, even if Republican policy liberated millions of people from tyranny, as is the case with Afghanistan and Iraq.
When Clinton ordered military action in Kosovo, the Democrats were quick to focus on the advancements made in human rights for those we liberated. But when their party is out of power, they succumb to selective amnesia regarding our acts of liberation.
