Alot of people would consider death metal to be the heaviest thing ever, others find grindcore heavier, others are more scared by black metal, others by sludge...what is the heaviest type, and which bands best typify that?
(ps - No-one saying SlipKnot please. Good band, but not one of the heaviest. Thanks.)

i love slipknot, but i agree, there are heavier out there. it depends on what you mean by heavy, by lyrics, or music, for music, slipknot is pretty heavy, and for music wise, check out these few sites. i have them bookmarked and love them.

some of these are pretty good, but not all

I would have to say the heaviest type of metal is Brutal Death Metal, Grindcore is heavy but most of it is only blast beats and the songs are only about 1 minute long giving rest between each songs. Brutal Death Metal contains very distorted guitars, the deepest vocals imaginable and the heaviest drumming alive, it tends to give me a headache, well maybe because i am more of a Black Metal fan. But if you want heavy listen to Disgorge from Mexico and The Berzerker from Australia. Brutal Death Metal is the heaviest in my opinion.

ive heard a lot of death metal stuff and thats mean & evil, but GABBA from holland came from hardcore techno and its faster than hardcore, heavier than death metal and a 1st class one way ticket to the looney bin. the fastest ive heard was short controlled bursts on terrordrome 8. at 325 bpm its insane.

The hardest band I've heard is Cradle of Filth.
Hardest music is probably the sort of stuff DJs like Loftgroover and Scorpio used to play in the Technodrome of Helter skelter - 1000BPM dark gabba stuff.

I love black metal but i don't think it is as heavy as death metal.
the band that i really like for death metal is cannibal corpse.
but i don't know if that would be the heaviest death metal band.
Under black metal i love CRADLE OF FILTH.
but yeah.
