Better to scan for known monitor and spyware tools. Quickest way is to do an online scan (see source below).
Or install and run spybo (free):

IMPORTANT: if you find any spyware it doesn't mean your friend has placed them there. False positives or contamination from other sources (surfing) are more likely. It's just an ease of mind.
If you have a PC guru friend (of a friend), ask him over to take a look if you feel paranoid. Some things are hard to catch even for a single anti-spyware software package.

Highly unlikely. The only way to do that is by instaling some spyware program. This is not a common thing though. The most common way is if he had access to your e-mail. Then he can monitor what you send and or receive. Alternatively he just broese through your history folder and or cookies. They tell every where you have been on the net. Also, he may join the same forums you have under a name you don't know about. Then he observes from there. Finally if you post a lot then he can just do a quick search for your internet name.
All that I said above is possible and very low tech but most likely you tell him the information and then it just comes back to you. Maybe you don't remember talking to him about it. A good way to catch somebody is to create a fake character. What you do is go to another computer and create a new mail account under a guys name. The reason to use a different computer is so that he cannot figure out that you made the account. Make the name of the account an uncommon male name like michaelangelo Leninro something not common.. Do not tel anybody about this not any group or friend. Then send a couple of messages from your computer to michaelangelo (or whomever). Have a conversation with yourself about topics that nobody knows about. like wanting to meet at a certain location downtown on tuesday. Reply to yourself but again, using a different computer. Do this for like a month. If he mentions anything about it or acts strange based on the false information you agev to yourself then you know he is spying. Ofcourse, if he reads this post then he will have eveything figured out.

First thing has he had time alone with your computer, or has he sent you software and you ran it and it did nothing or it was pointless. If you answer no to both of these he probably is not.
You can do scans for spyware for free without installing anything at www.trendmicro.com
If you really want to be sure he is not. Have your hard drive reformatted dont forget to save any files you want onto cd or dvds. Then reinstall your operating system.
best of luck

one way to find out if he is spying on you is to "fake" an affair on the computer... type in many "cheating" websites in your web browser and write "fake" notes in your documents folder from a non existant person named ted. If he starts acting funny days after you embeded them on your computer or he confronts you about it, then you know for sure he is spying on you.

Right-click on my computer and disable remote assistance, this way if your boyfriend was controlling your computer from his, he can't do it anymore. That would be one less thing to worry about.

You could always wait till one of his good friends is mad at him and then ask his friend. Might work.
