first we must subtract x/2 from both sides of the equation.
x/2 + y/5 - x/2 = 1 - x/2
x/2 on the left side of the equation will be cancelled out (we must subtract x/2 so that y/5 will be the only term that is left on the left side of the equation)
y/5 = 1- x/2
to eliminate the denominator of y, multiply the whole equation with the value of y's denominator and in this case it is 5
[y/5 = 1- x/2] * 5
y = 5 - 5x/2

For a shortcut,
First transpose x/2 to the other side of eqn. ==> transpose means getting a term from a side of the eqn to the other side and changing its sign from + to - or - to +.
y/5 = 1 - x/2
multiply the other side of equation by the denominator of the left side.
y = 5 * (1 - x/2)
y = 5 - 5x/2
then thats it the answer
y = 5 - 5x/2

in the second step, you are actually dividing the right side of equation by the coefficient of y. In this case the coeff is 1/5
thats way (1 - x/2)/(1/5) is also equal to 5 * (1 - x/2)

Good Luck!!!

The steps are:
x/2 + y/5 = 1
subract x/2 from each side to get
y/5 = 1-x/2
multiply each side by 5 to get
y = 5 - 5x/2
