I have 2 bettas and my male has already started making his bubble nest. I noticed she is much bigger and was wondering when I might expect for the spawning to begin so I can make sure I can get her away from him after all of this happens. She has been getting bigger for approximately a month now. I'm new to bettas and not quite sure what all is to take place with this event.

Thanks for your help!

Once he starts his nest and you place them together breeding will usually start within a few hours. It can take a bit longer, sometimes as much as 24 hours, but normally it's just a few hours. Once they start they are usually finished within 2-3 hours. You can tell they are finished when he keeps her away from the nest and she is getting picked on badly.

You should have food for the fry ready at this point. You need to have some infusoria and mircoworms or similar food read to feed them within 3-4 days after spawning.

You can not rely on him making a bubble nest as a sign of him being ready...My Rover (Rover was his name) NEVER built a nest until the spawn started producing eggs...after the first couple of spawns, I learned his "signs" for being ready. He was never a good nest builder, but he was a wonderful daddy...I just lost him yesterday. He just finished raising his 2nd brood this yr (and he was around 3 yrs old)! I found he had passed yesterday morning...What a DAD! The female will show vertical "bars" when she is ready, and will also display "submissive" behavior (IE...head down). There IS a lot of chasing, and biting during a spawn...make sure you have a tank ready for her that is clean so she does not get sick.

If you have a 10g tank, put lots of plants on the far side of the tank away from where he is building his nest. This will give her cover after the spawn...spawning takes a long time (several hrs!)...the longest mine ever took was close to 7 hrs (like bcaquatics stated)...the shortest one has taken was about 4. I'd ck out Betta sites for more info, and join a forum that is FISH only...I was very unsuccessful until I joined...http://fishroom.rapidboards.com/index.php?act=idx...they helped me, and I have 2 spawns this yr...they have also helped me save my Betta on several occasions.

If you really want to learn, ck out the forums and betta sites!
