I have a GFI outlet that blew and the fuse in the main breaker is not popped. The little red light is not on showing it is blown, but nothing will work plugged in. The reset button won't push in and stay. Any ideas with whats wrong with it.

Could be one of three things, whatever caused it to trip is still connected and so it won't reset. The breaker to the outlet is tripped but you are not looking at the right breaker or it is tripped but it is not obvious. Must turn the breaker to off, then on. The third possibility, if you have power to the outlet box and the GFI won't reset even though nothing is connected, is that the outlet is bad and needs replacement. Keep in mind that GFI outlets frequently feed more outlets than the one with the button on it, they could be in other bathrooms, the garage, the basement, so look for other dead outlets and if you find one, disconnect everything plugged in a try resetting the GFI again.

We were told about these during our home inspection when buying our house. Apparently GFI outlets are sometimes interconnected with others in the house... we were told if this were to happen in our washroom and the reset did not work, to go to the other washroom and reset that GFI outlet also. If this isn't the case, it doesn't cost too much to buy a new one.

I am replacing my GFI. Took off the old, installed the new. hot to brass screws, white to silver. There are 4 kitchen plugs working off this GFI. Now, with new on, only plugs on the right side of the GFI work, and actually, only top of one plug works on one. I have changed the white wires to upper and lower positions, still, no workie. My brother in law said there needs to be a metal piece that connect the two black ,hot. Can't see one, but this is a brand new GFI and not too sure if it isn't built in or something. I am at a total loss and my wife thinks I am a dummy. I hate working with electricity. But, have wired this exactly like directions. Does it matter if the wires are in the top push hole or bottom, on each screw? I am beginning to believe my wife.

the little light on my GFI outlet stays on but there is no juice in the plugins. The light switch connected to the GFI works. Nothing happens with the reset button or the test button. What is wrong?
