are is the plural of is. So if your subject is singular (like dog) then you use is. If it is plural (like dogs) you use are.

If there are multiple singular subjects (the dog and cat) you use are because it can be replaced with They or We.

I vs me. If it sounds right it probably is. I am, I was, I should, my friend and I are.

You will never see a sentence start with ME. (Me and my friends....so very incorrect English)

Never, ever say:

"Do you want to come to the movie with John and I?"

It's wrong, wrong, wrong. If you'd be going to the movie with me, John wouldn't change it "me" is a direct object pronoun and "I" is a subject pronoun.

Thus, the correct way to ask would be:

"Do you want to go the movie with John and me?"

It's all part of the declension of the noun 'to be' which goes

I am
He is
She is
We are
They are

Thus in a sentence you would always say 'I am', never 'I are'. Similarly you would always say 'We are' or 'They are' rather than 'We am' or 'They am'. If it was a question you would say 'Am I?' not 'Are I?'

Well, you can't say "I are fine." or anything like that. You can always say something like: "Bob and I are good friends."
