I know that underaged drinking is illegal, but what happens to the kids that get caught doing it?

It's going to depend on how many other offenses the person has, how much he bought, if he had a fake ID or if the person just sold it to him without checking, and probably how he reacts to getting caught. It could be anywhere from the cop saying, "what do you think you're going?" "get outta here!" (if the kid is unbelievably lucky, this almost never happens) to him going to a Juvenile Detention Center. Usually there are some sort of fines. If the kid didn't have a fake ID, sometimes the cops will take a little easier, especially if this is the first offense. If the kid looks old enough, they will sometimes even recruit the kid to work for them as part of sting operations, thus also reducing his penalty. It varies a lot by state also. There is really no one set punishment for this offense. Hope that helped.
