Not for an extended period of time. Bread doesn't have the vital nutrients that fish require to be healthy. (I am assuming you are talking about pet fish, not fish in a community lake). If you don't have any food for them, spend the $2 to buy some fish food at the pet store...

Well, the simple answer is, no. Bread might be OK for the occassional snack for wild fish in a pond, river or lake but never put bread into an aquarium. Even small pieces will just get soggy and sink to the bottom, rot, cloud the water, clog your filtration, and make a mess. Also it doesn't have the balanced nutrition that a good staple food will have. A quality staple food will have essential amino acids, fats and carbohydrates that are readily available to your fish.
Fish food is cheap - just head out to the pet store and get some. It's even available in most grocery stores. It's a good idea to supplement the staple food with an occassional treat like brine shrimp, tubifex worms, or krill - of course depending upon what kind of fish you have.
Most importantly, do not overfeed your fish! Only give the fish enough food that they can entirely consume in a few minutes. Leftover food will pollute the tank and lead to disease. It is far better for your fish to go for a few days without food instead of overfeeding them.

bread wont have the nutritions the fish need. Fish are either meat eaters or raw veggie eaters. Bread is made for people there are lots of additives and artificial things in it. Also it will be bad for your water chemistry. If you want a treat, raw zucchini is great for fish

In my opinion anyone who owns fish and doesn't do research on their breed to find out all about them is going to have a disaster down the road. Many factors effect fish health, water, ammonia level, ph balance, type of food, amount of food, temperature, type of filtration, mix of breeds with community and semi aggressives. You gotta know this stuff man if your you're gonna be a good steward to these little guys. I keep fantial goldfish and love to see how they respond to good care. I even find my guys prefer one brand of food over the other. Found out the one they like had as its number one ingredient fish meal. The other brand they didn't like had wheat for its number one ingredient.....oh, and whats in bread....oh yea.....wheat! I hope you enjoy your fish as much as I do. Treat them right....go buy a book on them and read it.
