I live in an apartment in Miami, and have a new baby.. I'm concerned with the idea of losing power (particularly A/C) during Hurricane Season.. Is there a portable generator that is small and quiet enough to put on my balcony? Is is safe to use one on a balcony?

You will need a fairly large generator to power the A/C system. Check the electrical requirements to ensure you get something suitable.

Your other major concern is carbon monoxide poisoning. Get a CO detector to install in your house. I have two of them as well as several smoke detectors installed permanently throughout my home.

Read through my home generator page for ideas.

I think any generator would be safe to use on a balcony or deck. The noise won't be a big deal if it has a proper muffler.
I have seen construction companies do this all the time. The people who built my house also did this. Try to determine which applicances/lights/ a/c you really can't live without in the event of a storm and try to get a generator the appropriate size to run those items. A whole house generator may cost many thousands of dollars.

Honda and Onan make the quietest generators I have seen. Putting one on a balcony would work as long as fumes do not enter the apartment. Doubtful you will be able to service the whole place with one though. You could run the air (window unit) and maybe a couple other things.

you will still have to run the power cord tho the door that will allow exhaust gas to come in and not a good ideal I would find another place during a big blow rember CO can kill.
If you did I would seal the door opening with plenty of duck tape air tight and keep a window open to allow fresh air in

The first question you will have to ask is if you apt. complex will allow you to have one. Next you have to consider carbon monoxide. Yes you may lose power but safety is more important.
