In my family, the importance of a post-secondary education is constantly stressed. Without a post-secondary education, I was always taught, I cannot maintain my upper-middle-class lifestyle. I come from a family who are almost always physicians, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, attorneys, professors, CPA's, and business professionals. So obviously it is expected of me to follow in one of these professions and devote at least five years of my life to a collegiate education.
Notwithstanding the aforementioned, however, I think it is "possible to be successful in life without a college/university education." Success does not mean having a professional degree and raking in at least 80,000 USD a year. Success, in my most humble opinion, means that one found their meaning/purpose in life and they are happy at what there doing while achieving to their utmost potential.
There are a lot of "successful" people in life who never set foot on a college campus or even ever finishing the degree they started. For instance, Bill Gates could be one of example of someone who left without taking his degree and became the wealthiest individual in the world. I know that example is cliche but I certainly feel that education is sometimes overrated. Education is nothing without experience. Success is what you make of it. You make success; success does not make you.
I wish you much success in life. :-)

Yes. It is possible but the odds are against you. Some technical schools train people for good high paying jobs in only a couple of years. There are also four year college degrees that are virtually worthless in the job market. Still, a degree is almost a requirement for a successful career.

You can always learn a trade or if you make it as an entertainer or professional athlete, and it doesn't have to be at the level of a celebrity.
I have a degree in Advertising, but my current job has nothing to do with advertising. But having that degree to put on my resume certainly helped me out.
Also its not as unlikely and impossible some people say. You can get a job at a popular retail chain like say Target or Best Buy and work your way into a management position or get into a commission position and make a nice living.

Sorry, but I don't share the first few answerers' optimism. While it isn't impossible to be successful without formal education, it is rare. Before I went to school, I had a crappy job and had an equally crappy life. Then, what a coincidence, I went to school, and I now have a better job and a higher standard of living.
And using Bill Gates as an example isn't exactly something you want to go by. I mean, how many people are really like Bill Gates? If you're a super genius, then sure, you don't need a college education. Most of us aren't, so we need to go to school. Sorry.

It is possible but not very likely. In order to get a good paying job you will most likely need to get an college education. But hey, college is not for everyone ,and you might be able to make it out there without going to college.

YES but it depends on your ambition, drive, and abilities. Most people who are really rich are entrprenuers and didn't go to college also some of the MOST successful people are entrepreneurs. It all depends on how hard you're willing to work. College helps a lot.

Absolutely. My best friend quit college after one semester and she is the most successful (and content) person I know. It's ambition and attitude.
