Are you sure it's the same exact product?

If it is, then it's simple: markup / greed.

All sorts of things can cause the price differences:
-how much they were able to buy it for
-how much they are paying for rent for the store
-are they paying a salesperson some commission?
-how much profit the store feels they should get on a sale
-are they a store that will negotiate pricing? (maybe they keep it a bit high and plan to negotiate down)
-does the store believe that their clients are price-conscious? (For example Sharper Image sells some things that you could buy elsewhere)

Manufacturers are not allowed to set the prices. They can only recommend. That's why you'll see MSRP listed on many things (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price).

Because different companies charge different prices...

It is the same with EVERYTHING. I go to the gas station and buy a pack of gum for $1.05, the same pack is $.85 across the street.

The reason is that they company that has a cheaper price, usually makes it up somewhere else.

Big box retailers, for example, charge less of a profit margin for your laptop than say the small computer shop right down the street. But the big boxer gets you on the way out by overpricing their cables, print cartridges and hounding you to buy a service plan that costs you $79.99 for 2 years.

They tried to get me to buy a 2 year service plan on my Logitech speakers when they came with the manufacturers 2 year warranty. The look on his face was priceless when I pointed it out to him.

If it's a different store, then they usually have different prices on same items. If it's the same store you are contrasting, some stores charge more for the same thing because they are different geographically.

one store is having a sale
one store could be buying in volume (so they get a discount)
one store could be trying to get rid of them
one store will sometimes discount one thing, in the hopes that when you buy that thing they discounted, you also buy some additional items
