We used all the money spent in Iraq and Afghanistan and used it to secure our ports and borders and root out the "enemy" already here?

Wouldn't this strategy also better lend itself to the isolationist doctrine preferred by many conservatives?

Of course it would.

What conservatives do you know who are isolationist? That does not gel with the free market economics of most conservatives. I am certainly not an isolationist - we need to be involved with the rest of the world.

But I do think we should secure our borders. That's not being isolationist - it's being safe.

as an independent conservative (anti-neocon) I largely agree. although we had every right to go into afghanistan, and "isolationism" doesnt quite encompass the whole strategy. we'd still engage in trade and denounce human rights abuses abroad; but we'd do what teddy roosevelt suggested: walk softly and carry a big stick.

And let the enemy fester and grow strong while we stagnate? It didn't work in the 30's and it doesn't work now. We need to knock these little sheikdoms back before they get too big for us to handle. I tend to like the idea of isolationism but in practice it fails.
