no, I don't think much of anything is "Free" in the long run and the worst things often come with a considerable price just because of the way they are.

You could probably say that. Jail is free, and it's one of the worst things. Death is free, and its one of the worst. Free credit reports are free (not) and you end up paying for them somehow. Nothing that is good is free in this life exept having inner-happiness.
