I am not at all uncomfortable. Indeed, there's a fellow at my church who has cerebral palsy and has walked with crutches all his life. I recently told him that were I not currently attached to a wonderful man already, he would be in "serious trouble."

He laughed - and took it as a compliment. I meant it.

It's not those with physical limitations that I find difficult to be around, it's those with mental limitations - not just IQ but the lazy the indolent, the conceited, etc.who turn me off completely.

Almost everyone in my family has muscular dystrophy, so I don't have any problems being around disabled people. My father and 2 siblings have a form of muscular dystrophy. They are all productive members of society. They may be handicapped, but none are handicapped in the head. My father was a communications engineer, my brother is a master accountant and my sister is a doctor ( she also holds several masters degrees, bachelor degrees). I tend to forget that they are disabled. After a while, I'm sure that you would feel more comfortable being around them. For the most part I think people are uncomfortable because it reminds them that life is not always just/ perfect, and they want to be politcally correct- so they don't know how to act or what to say, so they feel awkward. As far a dating one, no I wouldn't- not because I feel its a bad thing, but rather because I think that my husband of 27 yrs might not like it. lol. If he had been handicapped when I met him, it would not have mattered to me one bit.

Don't forget to be generous with the Muscular dystophy telethon this year. Alot of people are depending on it.

I'm deaf, and grew up around all sorts of disabled people. So yeah, I'm cool with it. No, I don't feel pity or sorrow or anything like that. It's kind of a turn-off and annoying. I treat them the way I'd like to be treated -- with respect. The only thing I'm not comfortable with is asking about their disability and what term like "able-bodied" they prefer. I'd only ask if we're getting to know each other; not come up to them and ask out of the blue. And yes, I'd date one.

I'm perfectly comfortable with both the physically disabled and those who are temporarily able-bodied. As we age dear, we all become disabled in some way, you wait and see.

Would I date a disabled person, have and have dated TABS too, there's jerks in both groups.

i feel totally comfortable around physical disabled people. My son who was 14 died Jan 2005 was disabled due to a accident. When i would take him out people would stop and stare and it made me so mad.

It makes me nervous, like if I say the wrong thing, they might get their feelings hurt, except my father. He got in a car crash in '92 and he has his entire left femur replaced by a metal rod so the bone will grow back over it, and it still hurts him and he still has the marks where the screws were put in. But he is able to walk easily, no wheelchair, no cane, no constant rests. Yes, I would gladly date one if that particular one had a good personality, and they were nice.

I always ask what happened and get the details. I feel if you don't do that then it hangs in the air and then that leads to a discomfort.

It depends upon the disability. Give a "hypothetical" in your additional comments.
