New York Highlanders and the Boston Americans...they were also the Red Stockings before becoming the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have been called other things besides, such as the Americans, Puritans, Somersets, and Pilgrims to name a few. However, the only official nickname they've ever had has been the Red Sox.

Those other names were made up by local newspapers. The most commonly used name was Americans, to distinguish the team from the Braves.

The Yankees' original name was the Baltimore Orioles. That was one of the original teams when the A.L. started in 1901. After a couple of seasons they were bought and moved to New York where the were known as the Highlanders.

The Red Sox were originally the Boston Americans.

The Yankees were originally the Baltimore Orioles, before moving to New York and becoming the Highlanders. Although it was a different city, they are indeed the same franchise.
