There have been so many great catches, but the first one of the past 50 years that came to mind was the one Ron Svoboda made in the 1969 World Series.

1969- SF Giants Willie Mays races for the right center fence along w/ rightfielder Bobby Bonds. Both get to the fence at the same time, but Willie reaches a little higher than Bonds and snags a homer back from over the fence. As he and Bonds crash to the ground, Willie has his breath knocked out by Bonds' knee when they both land on the warning track. Willie is almost out, but Bonds reaches into Willie's glove to show the umps he caught the ball. Best catch ever. NOTE: Derek Jeter and Junior Griffey interviewed Mays before the All Star game and he named this catch as his best ever. Even showed a replay of it, again it was amazing.( Sorry, I don't use the other 'A' word )

Jim Edmonds catch against the Royals when he played for the Angels - he was running full sprint towards the center field wall , he picked up the ball over his head and dove towards the fence and caught it - much better than the Willie Mays catch - it was similar to the Willie Mays but Edmond DOVE and caught the ball with his back to the field - unbelievable - Gary Matthews catch last year was awesome too - he did a full 360 jump and robbed a homer while his back was to the field

Jim Edmonds catch when he played for the Angels against the Royals. The one where he caught the ball while diving backwards at full speed.

Yeah I would have to go with Gary Matthews Jr. He scaled a big fence, reached over it and without looking up at it managed to catch it. Truly amazing play.
