I know that regular honey bees won't make a nest on the ground but yellow jackets will. They're nasty too so it's best to keep your children away from them..
You'll have to destroy the nest when it's dark to get rid of them
Raid has a good spray for them.I foget what it's called but it has a horn type nozzle on the end of the sprayer.I "think" it's called a bee and wasp blaster but you'll be able to find it in the store.
Good Luck and be careful.Wait till it's dark.

Given the present bee difficulty - and the significant discount in bee populations around the nation - many beekeepers will come get the bees/beehive for you. You simply have to name them. The first rule is don't do something till it's darkish, whilst the bees are again within the hive. The moment rule (sunlight) is don't put on yellow... they're interested in it. The exceptional colour is gentle sun shades of khaki, and the opposite noticeable matters, corresponding to no sugar beverages, and so on. Don't swat them, however simply slowly fade again. If you swat and kill one, like most of the flying stinging pests, they emit a chemical "alarm" that brings others to the "rescue." If you get chased, as a rule talking, they fly in immediately strains, so zig-zag as you run. Just decide on a reliable spot, and watch wherein they're all returning to find the hive within the flooring, log, and so on. If it's off your estate, like a ditch in the back of the fence, and so on., you're for your possess. If you name a personal exterminator, they are going to no longer come until it's for your estate. If you name the park carrier, they most often won't come both. The Environmentally Safe and Sane Way to Eliminate the Ground Nest Make definite those are the black and yellow flooring-residing social wasps (those don't seem to be bees) which are very competitive and no longer "bee wolves" that hunt wasps (or the rusty-tinged cicada killers). The social vespid yellow jacket wasps are so much harmful in past due summer season, so if you're close a nest, uncover any person to manage the nest who isn't prone to have an anaphylactic response to being stung. Wait till darkish, whilst the bees are again within the nest. If you have to mark it, go away an historic rag (impartial colour) close the nest. Come again at nightfall with a scrap of window display and a pot of boiling water (a small electrical water pot will do). Put the display over the nest front and pour within the scorching water. Most of the bees can be cooked, those bees don't like rainy flooring. Check for undertaking within the morning and repeat if critical.

You can see the comb? It could be hornets if they are building a paper nest close to the ground attached to a bush. Yellow jackets will do that as well, though they mostly build under the ground with no nest visible. I know of no bees that build and open nest on top of the ground.

Some kinds of hornets make nests in the ground. They will dig a tunnel and build their home in the lawn. I've had them in my lawn at least 2 separate times. I've never seen the honeycomb through the opening, though. Could it be that the honeycomb you saw blew there or fell down from somewhere else?

There are such things as ground wasps (yes they build nests in the ground) and they are nasty if you happen to have them coming after you. My dad happened to run over a nest with the lawnmower once, luckily he wasn't stung.

Yes, it's possible. Yellow jackets will do the same thing. You'll probably need an exterminator to take care of them for you.
