it was suggested to use better fuel.....
so what gas should i use? And i would have used the term dieseling but didnt know if that was a correct term or not.
Truck runs great ecept when i turn it off. Only does it once in a while.

will i need a regulaur timing light or adjustable?

and does anyone know the timing for tdc?
I dont have an rpm gauge so how will i know the rpms it sopposed to be at?

Take a look at the left,,drivers side of the carburetor, do you see a solenoid near the throttle linkage? That solenoid should increase the idle speed for the A/C, but was also used to close the throttle plates with the engine off. Too high of idle speed on a hot engine will also cause this. See if the solenoid is stuck in the extended position. Key on, it should come out, Key off, it should retract and the throttle blade close.
Good Luck

I did this quick little test and its not moving at all. when you mean throttle blade are you meaning the butterfly or the rear blade? Its a 2 barrel . Not familiar with the blade.
Also is this solinoid is directly in front of the throttle linkage. It seems like this is a simple fix. If this solinoid isnt moving at all then this is bad? I noticed i can move it with my hands and it touches the throttle linkage. But wont move on its own

there are many causes for this problem could be in the ignition system does it run like it dos with the key on? or does it spit and sputter and then die? your engine timing may be several degrees off, you may also have the carburetor to leen causing it to run on"left over" fuel. I have also seen distributor modules back feed and cause this problem

You need to first set all timing and carb to specs or very close to specs. Then give the truck a run on the highway with some carbon cleaner in the fuel tank. Then recheck your idle and carb settings to be sure they are still right. This is usually caused from a carboned up motor which keeps setting the available fuel/air mixture off making the motor run without ignition. If you still get this problem, you might be experiencing a leaking float bowl in the carb. Good luck.

u need to check the timing. call to the auto zone and ask for the timing of your engine or the firing order and check if its the correct or try to move your distributor clock wise or couterclock while the engine is running and check if that improves your engines idle also check for a wire that is hooked were its not supposed to be hooked

This is known as dieseling and is usually cuz'ed by running too low of Octane gas for you particular engine.

Good luck!
