Also, is there any big difference in performance with 1GB of system ram compared to 2GB of ram? I'm not to keen on the technical side of things. Is 1.6Ghz a big difference than 2.2Ghz? I'm not a heavy computer user and this will be my first laptop. Basically, I will pretty much use it only for internet and music. I won't be loading any major games on it.

Acomputer with 1GB or 2 GB is as much diffrence as having $1 in your pocket as $2. A computer has 3 main numbers most people use to compare them.
EXAMPLE: has 1GB of RAM,
250GB of Hard Disc space
2.13GHz duo jizzmo 1000.
RAM is how much memory the computer has to do things you tell it to.The Brains. The hard disc is the amount of free storage you have to store programs and files. You can always buy separate storage Or flash drives, etc later down the road. Worry more about the other 2 instead.Unless the disc is really a low number like under 10GB. 2.13 GHz means the processors speed at which it shuffles around all that RAM to do the things you want it to.It's the legs.People have been listening to music, and using the internet long before computers had all the highpower hardware of today.Even had games back in the day too. Boy in my day sonny we had to add the 1 and 0's ourselves ! So even if you bought a 10 year old computer you would be fine.I am using a 256RAM 10GB under 1.0 GHz processor(PENT III) and I do just fine. I recommend taking this free online course Harvard has.It will bring you in out of the dark.

then 1gb and a 1.6ghz is fine. unless you plan on running Windows vista. which you probably will be since your buying a new laptop from best buy and nobody sell XP any more since microsoft quit supporting it.

I'd move to 2gb and 2.2ghz (make sure its a duo core 64bit) just to ensure its performance in the future

but yes. generally, the 1gb and the 1.6ghz will be quite enough to surf and listen to music.

But I, myself think directx 10 is the way to go (its super doper cool), gamer or no gamer.

I'd max out the cpu and memory and request a video card that absolutely will support Directx10.

Its probably only about 500 more to get into that bracket.
its a nice bracket to be in if you consider that in 2 years you might want a laptop that can do directx10. better to spend the extra 500 now rather than a full 1400$ all over again in a few years.

buy everything you can afford, because soon it will be out of date.

it is a fairly nice computer for the money though

Get the most you can afford with this laptop. Two gig minimum memory on the Vista OS. Don't fool with the 1 gig you won't be happy. Yes the clock speed will make a difference in the performance. Vista is a graphic orientated OS and the extra speed will make it faster in refreshing your screens. The unit your looking at is good for the price. Remember when you buy a laptop there are very few things you can upgrade. Go for the best performance you can afford. Good Luck.

If you need for music and internet I think its more than enough as using internet and music doesnt take much effort .. ( ram ) ghz .. its more than enough to run the computer smoothly
