I was doing some reading on Mormonism and was thinking to myself how can people believe in this crazy religion. Then I compared it to the mythology of mainstream Christianity and realized it was no less believable than the Mormon mythology.

Wow! What a horrible answer! The bible is full of errors and is constantly being updated. My question is how is the mythology of mainstream Christianity more believable than Mormon mythology?

It's more legitimate (for want of a better word) because more people believe it. Everyone knows that majority rules!

Mormon 'mythology' can be easily verified and unwoven from its fabric. The entire premise of the Book of Mormon is ancient travelers from the middle east arriving in the Americas by boat (no doubt some actually might have), and establishing old world culture and horticulture of which there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever.

Mormons have also originated some very flawed social experiments: The Anti-Bank-ing venture in Ohio, The United Order (theocratic communism), polygamy, and the condemnation of African Americans well into the 1970's.

Comparing mormonisn to christianity is a long stretch of the imagination, and it's 'legitimacy' will always be an unanswerable question.

Mainstream Christianity is based on the Bible alone. Mormonism is based on a book by Joseph Smith that was filled with errors and was constantly being amended. The Mormon's book came long after the Bible and totally contradicts the bible. The Mormons religion cannot be trusted, because it keeps changing. Try reading the Bible for yourself and seek God out in prayer. You will find God if you seek him with all your heart.

Where have you heard that errors are being corrected in the Bible?

Historical Christianity is based on the Bible. Mormonism is based on a book that Joseph Smith authored. The book is supposed to be the most correct on the face of the earth, yet it has to be continually corrected and other books fill in the missing gaps.
