It would mainly be a one person pet, owned by a twelve year old. Something that would like her quite a bit, and be gentle, with a not long but not short lifespand?

I would pick a rabbit - if you get it as a baby (a kit) it can adapt to be handled & they can be quite loving once they get used to you - it can be kept in a cage (size appropriate), it can be picked up & cuddled, it can be litter box trained & it can be taken outside on a leash for short distances
a cat would be fine as a kitten, but as it got older it might not want to be "handled" as much - some of the cats I have had were not "people-friendly" at all & there really isn't a good way to tell if they will have that temperment when they are just a kitten (one of my cats is more of a lap cat, than the others, but it is just a chance thing)
a dog would need much more attention than it seems your 12 yr old would be able to give him - that just wouldn't be fair to the dog

You should consider a cat. They're loving pets, but they are also fine on their own, so when the Twelve year old goes to school and other after school activities the cat ont freak out. They're not very destructive if you're willing to get a scratching post. Easy to potty train or they'll just go outside. Have a good sence to survive so it'll stay out of the way of cars. Curious and cute! A perfect pet for a twelve year old that the entire family can enjoy.

I am a little confused about the short lifespand but okay.. I would have to say a rabbit. If you want to spend time with the animal you can and if your busy they just need food and water. Best of luck!

Most domesticated animals will be loving to your child. I would have to suggest a cat, since she will be gone a lot. They r easy to litter train and are a lot more independent on those days were there is little human contact. All animals we choose as pets deserve as much attention as we can give them, and also promotes bonding. In my opinion, if you r worried about life span, maybe a fish is the way to go. Saying a life expectancy range makes me think that maybe a cat, dog, or horse is not the way to go. Good luck and take care.

With a guina pig and 2 birds, I wouldn't go cat. They really DO like to catch and eat them. A dog wouldn't be right eiter if she's not home a lot. Better a bird, or like animal like the guina pig. I had a Sun Conure, and she was adorable! She liked to lay on her back in my arms and I'd rub her little tummy, etc. BUT she was NOISEY!!!! However, there are other conures that aren't noisey, and are wonderful pets.

Well, if she is responsible enough to clean a cage and exercise the animal, and not get tired of it quickly, I would suggest a rabbit. They are cute, cuddly, loving, you can terach them to use a litterbox and just let them run around the house if you want. I'm not positive of the life span, but I think it is about 7 years or so. I think a pair of rats would really be best, believe it or not, but they only live for 3 years.

I would say, if you like rodents.... a hamster or a guinea pig. They are both really cute, and easy to take care of(for a 12 yr old). You can play with them, and some you dont even have to brush their hair ect... They are able to be in the house all the time and can even stay int he girls bedroom. I bet she would have a lot of fun with one of these animals!

Since the primary owner would be a child - I would recommend a stuffed toy.

Pets are not learning tools for children. They are members of the family - and as such are EVERYONE'S responsibility - but primarily the responsibility for its care rests on the ADULTS in the house.

IF you can recognize this, I would suggest a smallish, older adult dog from a shelter who will love you all for the rest of its life.

Otherwise, pets are not toys.

I would say a small mild tempered dog. Like a pomeranian or mini collie. If you don' t like that, go with a cat. A dog would work better with the other animals you already own.

A cat would be good. You would have to tame it if it's young and play with it but if it old and tame its ok. If it's old and mean good luck.

Good Luck
