I really do not understand specifically what you are asking. It is extremely hard to be helpful to people who don't take the time to write clearly and completely.

A router is used to interface with the Internet. It permits more than one pc to access the internet. It controls the traffic out and back in and routes replies to the proper requesting pc. It also prevents unauthorized access (firewall abilty) and it provides dynamic IP addresses for LAN pcs if you activate this feature (DHCP).

A network switch enables LAN pcs to congregate and be able to swap information back and forth. A network switch does not provide DHCP so without a router or other DHCP server, LAN pcs have static ip addresses manually entered.

Often a router's LAN port connects to a Network switch which enables LAN PCs to access the internet.

Household routers often combine router and network switch functions in one unit therreby avoiding a network switch need provided you do not have more LAN devices than LAN ports on the router.

All of the above is common for Ethernet networks using cat5 cable (wired connection).

You can have a wireless router or a wireless access point wired into your LAN. Either of these will enable wireless links between LAN pcs and the router or wireless access point.

All networked pcs on the LAN can share files if the folders are set to permit file share.

I trust this helped.

If you need more info, please be explicit and describe whant you want to know.

Modem (the internet) goes into the router, then there are ports, where you put in either an ethernet cable or a wireless transmitting thing (some routers come with one) and the internet is sent to all things that are connected. This also can be used as a network between all the computers connected (LAN)

Computer-to-computer, they call it "Ad Hoc" network. You use the Ethernet Port to connect 2 computer or connecting wirelessly without a router if your computers do not have wireless devices.
