I spent 4 yrs in the military prior to the "don't ask don't tell policy". I came out to myself while in the military. Being Gay in the military didn't have any negativity. I did very well and was well respected in my battalion. If you work hard and are a good person, you will excel in the military. Being Gay is just part of who you are. Good luck and thanks for your service.

Unfortunately more people have been booted out of the military under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" for being gay than before that policy was in place. Being gay doesn't have anything to do with your ability to serve our country, however, the fact that some people believe that gays shouldn't be in the armed forces. All of the gays I've known that have served in the military did so closeted. The only thing you can do is be the best soldier you can be and keep your private life personal. Hopefully things will change and gays will be able to serve openly like they should.

My friend,

You have to understand the military's morality, which are just as fycked up as any other governmental organization in the US and around the globe.

The reason why the military does not want homosexuals serving is because they all know what they have done in the past and homosexuality is a big part of it. From the Masons to Roman Church...they all know what they have done and what they are doing. So to keep the wholesome American military popularity peachy keen, they must be this derogotary and down right nasty towards Homosexuals.

The best advice that I can give you in this situation is to be yourself and of course keep your sexual preference under wraps as much as possible.

I know that is a shitty thing to say, but you are in honor of my respect and regardless what your sexual preference is THANK YOU for serving as one of our soliders and continue to keep your head up.

Besides my friend, there are more gay men and women enlisted then straight...so you will be fine :)

Good Luck.

Unfortunately the higher ups in government has thought for a while that gays in the military would be too much of a distraction since they may want to sleep with everyone, which we know is a load of crap. The good news is many now, including a lot of the military disapprove of the current policy and gays may soon be able to serve openly

i think that you should just be the best you that you can be. as corny as that might sound that is the only way that you will enjoy your experience. you joined the military, this is a big step. you signed a contract and this will be a job not your life. you have to enjoy it. thank you for all the good that you will do. go serve your country and be smart. don't let them stop you from being you. just remember that to keep your home away from work.

Because people are stupid, ignorant, selfish and afraid. There is no good reason why things are the way they are concerning gays and the military. There are many gay people in the military, and I am sure that they all do their jobs well. Hopefully one day soon, their policies will change.

It is your right to serve your country regardless of what your sexual orientation is...it that is your desire.
I'm sure there have been many others before you and probably quite a few in high authority who have served and made a career out of the military.
Try not to worry and just give it your best.
Peace

The original reasoning, aside from just prejudice, was bunking. Officials thought that bunking gay people with straight people would lead to uncomfortable situations. I don't personally agree, but that was part of the reasoning.

You knew the rules before you voluntarily signed your name. You made an oath to follow the rules, and now you want to back out, renege on your word?

Sorry but you knew before you joined, now you will have to serve as you said you would. Your only option is taking a less than honorable discharge that will follow you around for the rest of your life.

You can still serve in the military anyway.
