I have a 2001 Honda Accord V6 lx, that has lately been putting out a sulfur smell from the drivers side center under the B pillar. I see mixed results from searches saying that its probably exhaust but I have never seen this before on any other car I've ever owned. It doesnt happen all the time but it is nausiating and overpowering. Is this because of the change of gas for the summer formulation? Is there anything else it might be? Thanks.

You are correct in your determination that the odor is caused by the level of sulfer in the fuel. It is not due to any deterioration of the catalytic convertor or any exhaust leakage.

the quick fix is to try different brands of gas from different service stations. All fuels are not the same and the formulation of the fuel changes batch-to-batch which means that what you have in the tank today will be different from what you put in next week. That's why the problem is intermittant.

The problem is probably more evident when the engine is cold or when you stop after a short trip after start up as the catalytic convertor is much less efficient when cold so you won't get a full conversion of the unburnt fuel during those times.

change the brand of fuel and, if necessary up the octane if the simple change in fuel doesn't do it.

hope that answers your question

sulfur dioxide, the sulfur smell you are getting, is a byproduct of using a catalytic converter. it sounds like you have a slightly rich fuel mixture, and an exhaust leak. the leak is probably just after the converter element.
