I was given a mattress that smells like cigarette smoke and I hate it. How do you get it out?

I would try a steam cleaner, then let it dry then fabreeze.

You don't. You can spray, take it outside for an airiing, but you're still going to have that smell, yuk! When we bought a bed from a smoker's house, we bought plastic mattress covers, the kind with a zipper. It doesn't get rid of the smell, but it keeps it contained so you don't have to smell it.

I find that febreze works pretty well (particularly the "allergen reducer" one) for cigarette smell.

You could also try spraying it with very watered down laundry detergent or fabric softener.

Also, if you get a hypo-allergenic mattress cover, it will block out smells from your mattress (especially if you wash it in strong-smelling fabric softener, as per the washing instructions). (Hypo-allergenic mattress covers run a bit expensive, though.)

Or, you could put baking soda on your mattress before you make it. That will absorb the bad smell.

Or, you could combine any of those.

Spray it heavily with a can of Lysol then direct a fan onto it for at least 4 hours. It won't completely be gone but it will make it bearable. Lying the mattress in the sun for hours would be great too be inconvenient.

Using upholstery cleaning system, dry clean it and then when weather and security permit it place it outside in the sun to air it out. You could spead baking soda on it to help to deodorize faster.
