considering that extra-terrestrial life most likely does exist - do you think it's unfair that they wouldn't share their advanced technology and medicine with us?

any thoughts?

I would be really skeptical about using alien medicine, simply because not all medicines and drugs have the effects just inn different earth species. Just think what unexpected effects alien medicine could have. For example, something that helps them heal wounds faster could cause multi-organ failure for us. And I would think the reverse could be equally true. What is wonderfully beneficial to us could be deadly poison for them.

The concepts behind the technology, on the other hand, could potentially be of great benefit. On the other hand, I worry about how some segments of society could misuse powerful technology. Just think of all the tools that we have that could be used as very formidable weapons in the wrong hands, and think of how powerful tools from advanced technology could be. How do you keep power, even beneficially intentioned power, from being misused. This has been a pretty common theme in science fiction, and I see merit in it. I think we need to mature a lot as a species.

To look at it from a different perspective, how do you know that they aren't already here and only sharing the technology that they think we can handle?

It depends on the civilization. If I were in charge of it, I probably would say that it would be okay to let EArth know that we exist, but I think it would be a huge mistake to share any technology with them. There is no harmless technology, any technology can be corrupted, and I would not want to be responsible for such a thing. Then again, the case could be made that the best way to avoid any responsibilty (fault) would be to avoid any contact at all if there is a huge gap in technological capability. Depends on the politics.

First of all, how do you know that they know that we exist? Second of all, considering that extra-terrestrial life probably exist in big numbers, if they share it with us, they'll have to share it with everyone if you want them to be fair. Third of all, perhaps they're a little selfish, but why would they share it with us. What would make them wanna do a thing like that? I mean, it would be very nice, but it doesn't do them any good. Fourth of all, it perhaps would do us any good either, we might not know how to use the technology and we may actually misuse it, destroying ourselves.

Conclusion: Life ain't fair! And that's the way it should be.

because the odds of a carbon based, oxygen breathing alien of comparable technology to ours is so infinitesimally small that it is unlikely any exist relatively close to us. If there are any aliens that are within practical distance of us, they are either:

A: millions of years advanced ahead of us, and such conceptions as "health" are long dead abstracts to them.

B: of a completely different physiology than us, and any technology or medicine they might have would be utterly useless or undeterminable to us

C: Are so advanced that they would view humans in the same way that we view ants. Ants are too simplistic for us to even try to comprehend, and nobody is rushing to invent cures for ant ills when there are more pressing matters (such as global warming or war or games shows) that are diverting their attention.

Your question does raise a good point regarding the future of man's space colonization; if we find a primitive alien world, or a human society regresses to primitivism, ought we offer any assistance we can, or should we allow their culture to develop naturally?

Why wouldn't they? Maybe they'd like to, but they just can't do it for some reason, like they don't know we exist or they can't get to us or something. It makes sense that a more advanced alien race than us would also have developed its philosophy more extensively and be more moral and compassionate than we are, so it is likely that if they knew about us they would like to share any kind of helpful technology they have with us.

It isn't unfair, it is just stupid if they did.

If an alien race has mastered space travel, they are obviously way more advanced than us - so why would they even bother to communicate or even visit us, who are frankly in comparision like ants to them. (We haven't even stepped on another planet yet)

You wouldn't show ants how to build a TV would you? So why would aliens share their technology with us - of which we will barely be able to comprehend.

Oh, that's simple.

The have something like a prime directive, prohibiting them from sharing technology. They want us to develop it for ourselves.

No. I don't think it is unfair. Any such life, if it exists, has not come to Earth and is probably not even aware we exist.

if they are out there i am sure that they know more then we do. but the bodies are different and technology will be for them not us.
