The US government does have some impact. The better question is why the Democrats complain about the cost of gas, even though the policies they're suggesting make it cost even more. The Democrats seem to support taxes on gasoline, although that will just raise the price. They seem to oppose subsidies to oil companies, but if they get rid of those, that will just raise the price of gasoline too. And they oppose creating new refineries and drilling for more oil in ANWAR, and that doesn't help. They could use the strategic petroleum reserve, and that might help a small amount for a small period of time, but then it'd be empty later if we needed it. They could set price controls, like we had in the 70s, but that would create gas lines, like we had in the 70s. If she created stability in the middle east, that might lower the price of oil. But I bet that her attempts to create stability through weakness will backfire.

If she raised gas mileage standards in cars, that would decrease the demand for gas, and that really would lower the price. But I'm not sure it'd be worth it if it resulted in cars that were less safe.

The world market does set the prices, but why unlike other presidents didn't Bush use some of the National Reserve?

Could it be that he has stake in the oil companies and the higher the cost of gas the more money he makes.

Nonsense, you have been watching too much FOX """NEWS""". Before we invaded Iraq oil was at $22 a Barrel and the UN was going to lift it's sanctions. That would have driven the price of oil DOWN to $18. At $22 a barrel Chevrons Quarterly Profit was $2 Billion, at $18 it would have been 0. That is why we invaded.

Chevrons Quarterly Profits are in the $28 Billion range now
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

It's so easy even a Neandercon could get it

When it does that in early 2009 it will strangle the economy and give us a return to the memorable Democratic administration of 1976-1980 with mega unemployment and stagflation. And the ensuing drop, drop, drop of hostages on the nightly news sitting for over 400 days. Since we can't attack terrorists on their own turf now why should we not suspect that they will return to their strategies of old besides a few new ones.

It's going to be higher than $4.50. They will still blame Bush. Others will blame Hillary or hopefully whoever else is President.

Instead of blaming someone else, some of us are going to do something about it. Don't drive so much for starters.

Granted the President doesn't set the price.. that doesn't mean they can't influence the market.

After all, Bill tapped the national reserves to drop the prices during his term.

My guess is Hillary and the rest of the Libs will continue to blame Bush for the gas prices and anything else she fails miserably at.!!!

That will only be a 50% increase. It's been more than 100% under Bush. What's your point??

No, we will be face to face with the "consumption tax" the Democrats have been talking about for around a decade. It was an issue that scared me away from the "left" for awhile.

Gas prices have more to do with direct and associated taxes than most anything else.
