I'm looking in to purchase a used german car preferably a Volkswagen GTI or Passat, but I've heard that it isnt such a great idea to go with used germans because it will cost alot to repair. Is this true??

With a Volkswagon i dont think you would see much of an increase. Now if it was some sort of High performance german car like a Porshe then yes, it would cost alot more to repair than a ordinary car. But a Volkswagon? I dont think so. They are just as common these days as any American made car.

No they don't. The parts might cost more and bit a bit more diffiult to find but the labor rates will remain the same.

I have an 87 VW that I love. In fact, I do most of the work on it myself. The fuel pump has an access panel in the trunk and all of the fittings for the various lines (fuel, brakes, etc) are brass and they come right off w/o breaking or having to heat up which is common on American cars. I would go with a VW over any American car.

depends on where you live. In europe the cost of parts arent any more expensive than any other brand. if you have to import the patys you will pay tax on importing the part. If however you use aftermatket parts then you will find them cheaper than genuine parts.(you will find they are sometimes the same part just labelled different!) The other way to look at it is the German cars are very reliable and you will probably find that you won't have to put your hands in your pocket that often. Get the car checked out first and check the service history.

All the ingines are internal combustion. The only difference you are talking about is the degrees of seperation between the two banks of cylinders. Both types of engines have been in use for years and are reliable.

You may want to look at American cars, they are cheaper to repair and parts are more available locally. good luck.

yeah, some parts will be more expensive. also, German cars are less reliable than even American cars, but with a used car it's all about how it was maintained. I would suggest yo have it checked out very well.

As djave says above Mercedes are used as cabs in Germany. yet why are they used as cabs - via fact they're so sturdy! I run a Mercedes and the favored and experience far exceeds the eastern opposition. The Mercedes has this experience of sturdy high quality. the eastern vehicles tend to be extra tiny and mild-weight. i does not knock the reliability of the eastern vehicles they like Mercedes have have been given this subject beat.

yes! for the most part you will have to ship them off to an authorized mechanic too (if you don't want to void the warranty).... but even if that isn't a problem, the parts are limited therefore making them cost more, and those prices are passed on to you as the consumer... good luck

If you plan to do your maintenance/repairs with factory parts, then you may find the cost of ownership to be higher. If you plan to use mainly aftermarket parts, there shouldn't be a noticeable increase.
