Which is better and why?

I think the home run derby is a bit better only due to the star power. I'm glad to see that so many big names in baseball (at least they are big to baseball fans) come out to this event and participate. I'm sick of seeing the Joe Nobody's (for the most part) in the slam dunk contest every year. These aren't even big names to basketball fans. I know there are maybe one or two guys that are B-list guys, but where are the A-list guys like V. Carter, or Lebron when this contest comes around? The dunk contest is a bit more enjoyable due to creativity factor. But I give the slight edge to the home run derby based on the BIG name factor. What do you think?

ah i love this questions. I think the HR derby is way better. because baseball is just one of those classic sports man nothing is more exciting than seeing a ball fly over 400 ft. the dunk contest is more creative, however i thing it is slowly losing popularity because lots of things have already been done "dunk wise", also because the big name stars rarely compete. i just think there is more skill involved in baseball. now dont mistake skill and athleticism. what other sport can a man be only 6ft tall and almost 300 lbs and dominate.lol. another question you have to ask yourself is this how many people in the world can dunk a basketball compared to how many people can hit a small round ball with a round bat 420ft? id say theres def more skill and talent involved in the HR derby, where at the dunk contest is more boastful, showing off, and just a show of "hey look how sweet i can dunck this ball". idk my opinion

good question tho!

The Dunk Contest was better in the Jordan / Wilkins era. Now the Home Run Derby is better. You get too many retrys in the dunk contest compared to before, and its all rookies. If Vince Carter, Lebron, Kobe, Wade, McGrady, or guys that are fan favorites were in it then I would say the dunk contest would be big again. Now its a joke. The skills contest is an even bigger joke as is the Pro Bowl for football.

The most key factor when comparing the HR Derby and Dunking Contest ... once you screw up on a dunk, you automatically lose points from the judges, and the time you have to dunk is very strict. Whereas, if you mess on in the HR derby (ground one foul) ... you can do that 9 more times and not be penalized, because you have 10 outs to work with, to hit as many HR's as possible. And those balls FLY! You generally see the same dunks over and over at the dunk contests, but HR's never get boring. That's my two cents.

If the Slam Dunk competition had superstars like Vince, Kobe Wade and LeBron then it would be so much better
but because the HR Derby has howard, Fielder Vlad and others it is better to watch

HR Derby over SD Contest by a long way.

The biggest reason is I've watched both with my sons (9 and 6 years old) and the boys had not interest in the slamdunk contest but were absolutely enthralled with HR Derby. They were excited and pumped after it was over. We are Angel fans and Vlad winning was huge for them but being able to share their excitement was what made it special for me.

HR Derby is better because it is EVEN GROUND. How many agree with all the ratings the Slams get? How many agree with everything the judges say? Now how do you argue if it was REALLY a HR or not? When a guy hits a HR he hits a HR.

I think home run derby could rebound if they shortened it. Fundamental flaw with the slam dunk contest: everybody hates the NBA...

Check out this sweet pic I got of David Ortiz putting a ball into McCovey Cove off a twelve-year old yesterday morning:

Your right, I mean in basketball they always have the up n comers rather than superstars like Kobe and Lebron.
Home Run Derby is a bit better but I'd like to see Junior and Rodriguez slug it out, rather than Alex Rios and Matt Holiday.
If Basketball brought in guys like V carter and Kobe it would have the upper hand for sure

barely, jsut barely, the HR Derby edges the SLam Dunk contest

because u get the big name guys like Vlad, Pujols, and Morneau to come out (this year for ex.)

but like the Slam Dunk u get the not so big named guys who jump at the opportunity (Rios, Holliday, Fielder)

I like the dunk contest b/c its quicker and we see some dunks that have never been done before.

Ive see HR's before, and they never change..and we also have to sit through all those outs. So that part is boring...usually in the dunk contest, each dunker only misses a few.
