every christmas eve, we watch muppets christmas carol together as a family, (because of the song, only one more sleep till christmas!) weve done it since my brother and i were little, and now do it every year! you could choose your own christmassy film, we also traditionally have crackers and cheese, pickled onion and beetroot, so having traditional snacks to go along is nice too!

1) My neighborhood always puts up lovely light displays, so I take my kids for a walk every evening to look at them.
2) A few years ago I started making gingerbread houses. I just buy a kit so I only need to decorate them, not bake them. Soon my son will be old enough to help and I think he'll enjoy it. I'll let him nibble a few candies as we go.
3) The family exchanges gifts on Christmas Eve and Santa leaves treats and small toys in the stockings by the fireplace for Christmas morning.
4) One of the grandmas makes Christmas cookies and lets the kids help decorate them. Rice crispy treats are also fun and less work.
5) On Christmas day we have a special breakfast (like sweet rolls) and a fancy dinner in the evening. My Mom likes having movie marathons all day.
6) Last year, I let my son pick out a pretty ornament to buy and add to the tree himself. I'm not if I'll always do this, but it was fun.

Many years ago we had a lovely one in the road (Avenue) where we live - the houses were canvassed to enlist owners into joining a group called "The Avenue Singers"
They practised carols for several weeks then sent little duplicated notes round to houses in the adjoining streets that they would be singing on such and such a date, and gave the name of Charity for which they would be singing.
Everyone dressed up in Victorian type gear, someone made lanterns similar to the ones on Christmas cards.
We made a lot of money for the local charities over the years and sent round more little slips to let people know how much they had raised.
Unfortunately, most of the oldies who were the backbone of the Avenue Singers are no longer with us.
This sort of thing does take quite a bit of forward planning, as you can imagine.

One of my students wrote an essay about their family tradition. On Christmas morning, her mother makes a huge layer cake out of pancakes. Between the layers is strawberry jam that represents the blood of Jesus. Chocolate sprinkles on top represent our sins, and powdered sugar on top of the sprinkles represents our sins being covered. Then they put a candle on top and sing happy birthday to Jesus before they all take a slice of the "cake." I just thought that was neat, and I had never heard of that before.
You can also get together with family and/or friends a few weeks before and have a cookie exchange. Each person bakes several dozen of a favorite kind of cookie, and then everyone gets together, plays some games and divvy up the cookies.

My husband and I each take the day after Thanksgiving off from work, we call this Holly Day. We go cut down our Christmas tree, decorate it and watch Christmas movies. If there is time we also make some Christmas cookies. Its a great way to start off the Christmas season.
