Has anyone used the sticky putty from HSN for leaks in copper pipes?

I agree, for something so easy to fix the right way, you don't want to chance it on a patch. And I am sure that is not what you want to hear. A correct way would be to turn off the water, cut out the area needing repair and replace using couplers-connectors that fit right over the pipe, and solder into place. It is actually very easy to do. Maybe you should call a family member who is handy, it really is simple.

If you use any putty for fixing a leak in copper pipe, make sure it is in an area you can check frequently. Most "band-aid" patches don't last long and will always start leaking when you are not home.

Sounds a lot like plumbers putty that is available at most hardware stores. This fix would not last very long, the leak itself should be repaired or the leaking pipe replaced.
