My friend's parents came over from Britain a few years ago and started in Las Vegas and rented an RV and drove through Colorado to see the Rocky Mountains, through the midwest to see Mt. Rushmore, kept heading east and flew out of New York. Last year they went back to Vegas, drove over to San Francisco, and their kids flew to New York. Personally I think you should see Chicago too. Chicago's a fun city.

I think it depends on what you are interested but do not think you can go wrong visiting Washington, DC, the Grand Canyon in Arizona, or NY City. Las Vegas, Nevada is fun too.
I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions. This is a big country with lots of interesting stuff, much like Australia.
