When we go to kings Island we always go left when you first go in the park. That's where the son of the beast and top gun and face off are. We would ride all of those rides and then work our way around the park. So to answer your question go left and just start riding. that's where most of the big rides are and if you get there as soon as they open there shouldn't be that big of a wait.
You should def bring something for headaches, sunscreen money for food and drinks, and you have to get a funnel cake! Yummm I love those things. Just a word of advice don't wear flip flops, and take your hat and sunglasses off before the rides. Or you will lose them :)
And i could be mistaken but I don't think there are any additional fees for the water park. As many time as i have been to kings island i have only been to the water park one time and we didn't pay additional.

Ride the Firehawk first. Its the newest ride to get there early and get in line. Ride the Beast next. Greatest Wooden Roller Coaster of all Time. After that go to Top Gun and Son of Beast are good rides as is the Vortex. Have not personally rode the Italian Job yet so don't know about that one.

dont know about the order to do the rides. but i just recently went to kings island and the new firehawk ride is AWESOME. the line is long though, but its totally worth it.
