Tar Removal from Carpet
If tar has somehow found it's way onto your carpet, don't panic. There's a simple solution for cleaning carpet stains caused by tar, and it only takes minutes. Spray WD-40, the lubricant with thousands of uses, directly onto the tar. Leave it for about ten or fifteen minutes and wipe off with a clean cloth. You may have to repeat this a couple of times, but soon your carpet will look the same as it did before the tar was tracked in.Good Luck!=)

When removing tar from your carpet, it’s important to act immediately before the stain sets in and dries. The sooner you act, the better your chances are of saving your carpet. Immediately take an old cloth and blot up as much of the stain as possible. Don’t rub the stain. If you blot gently, there’s less chance the stain will spread or set in deeper, even though blotting may take more time. When no more of the stain can be removed, take a putty or other dull knife and gently scrape away the tar while doing your best not to cause further damage to your carpet.

The safest thing to try first is putting an ice cube on the stain. This usually hardens the stain and lessens it "hold" on the carpet fibers. Then just scrape it off (gently) using a screwdrive or putty knife.Tar stains have a variety of chemical compositions. Some can be removed with turpentine and a sponge. Camping lantern fuel is mostly benzene --- which will dissolve tar stains. Use a plastic glove to protect you hand. g

I recently removed tar form mu new car carped on the drivers side Go to any NAPA auto parts store and pick up a spray can of CRC Dicc Brake Cleaner. Spray on a clean terry cloth towel at the end of your finger and rub the carpet clean in seconds. You may need to repeat till the carpet discoloration is gone.

Try soaking it in nail polish remover.
It's high acetone content get just about anything out of anything. It shouldn't damage the color of the carpet either. (I once accidently dumped a bottle of nail polish which quickly dried and got it out that way, and the colors of the carpet were not affected in any way.)
