Uncle Buck and The Great Outdoors were really good but you just can't beat his performance in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Del Griffith is one of the funniest characters ever. I can't go on a car ride with my brother or dad without one of us doing "the mess around" on the dash board.
John Candy was great, I still miss him.

I love a little-known film called Going Berserk. I don't know if it ever even played in the theaters.
I like it because John Candy was very John Candy in it, it featured all the great Second City stars, and it was written in the sketch style of SCTV (although woven together into one story). That, and it was just mad-cap hilarity.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles. John Candy and Steve Martin are about the funniest film combination I've ever seen. And he's not just an obnoxious jerk - he's got a very sad and lonely side that he hides well. PT&A is one of my favorite "holiday" movies.

The Great Outdoors because he actually acts, is normal, yet has great moments (like trying to eat the old 96er, and "big bear!"), his supporting cast was terrific as well: Dan Aykroyd, Annette Bening, snd the others, but you can check it out via the link. I just didn't like him in Uncle Buck, as it was far lesser a movie. The Great Outdoors contained universal themes people could relate to, essentually a vacation in a cottage.

I always believed that you could take any bad movie, add John Candy and it would be worth watching.
Examples: 'Speed Zone', 'Armed and Dangerous', 'Spaceballs', 'Nothing But Trouble' and 'Summer Rental'
I liked him in every movie he was in...but, I didn't like every movie, a lot of them were pretty bad, but HE was always great.
My favorites were 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles', 'National Lampoon's Vacation', 'Who's Harry Crumb?' (very underrated) and 'Stripes'.
But he was the greatest on television, I loved SCTV, it was the best work of his life. Man, I miss John Candy.

Uncle Buck. It is impossible now to imagine anyone else in the role, it could have been written for him.
He was also a serious actor and gave a great cameo performance in Oliver Stone's JFK.

My favorite John Candy movie... well it's a close one... he was great for his small time on-screen in Vacation.
But I definitely prefer his portrayal of Tom Hanks' sleazebag brother in "Splash". I loved when he flashed angry at the Hanks character's moping, when he says, "I'll never be in love like that." Brilliant performance for a very small role, but Candy put a lot of heart into it-- which is what seperates him from, say, Billy Bob Thornton in very similar movie roles.

Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and Stripes. Uncle Buck reminded me of my own Uncle, P,T, and A is a super smart great comedy. And I just really like his character in Stripes.
