There is a forest fire burning about 40 to 50 miles from my town... No danger from fire here but we are getting lots of smoke. I am keeping the house closed as much as possible but the smell is seeping in.

Ultimately I will need to take down drapes and shampoo carpets .... However, the fire is still burning and it is too ghastly hot to do major house cleaning here in July. Please, do not bother to suggestion "air freshing sprays" unless you know of one with no scent what-so-ever.

I have heard when you put a little bit of vinegar in each area in the house it will absorb the smell!

This plan works. Pick up several large shallow foil cooking pans and a couple of gallons of white vinegar. Do this in one room to prove to yourself it really works. Lay a couple of pans in the floor and fill with the white vinegar. Leave it in the room for 3-4 days. When you walk in you'll smell vinegar open a window and both smells will be gone in a day.

This plan works when gasoline has been spilled in an enclosed area such as a car trunk or interior. I've done this myself with great results.

Put vinegar in a spray bottle and use it as a air freshener.
Spray it on your drapes & on your carpet. This is good to kill cigarett smoke and other odors in the house.,onions, fish &ect. Good to spray in your trash can
And if you have a dog that urinates in the house, clean the spot with soap & water, and spray it with vinegar.and they can't smell the urine to urinate again on that spot..
If any one has a breathing problem at night, spray their pillow case with vinegar..........Vinegar is good to clean the whole house includding windows & mirrows.

If this don't work then you may have to move out especially if you have someone with a breathing problem. And you don't want your lungs to get filled with the smoke & cause you to have breathing problems. Good luck
