Does this mean your motor cranks and runs until you put it in gear and then it stalls? I will take it like that anyways. The first thing to do is to get all the on-board modules scanned to see if there are any codes stored that relate to or could be a clue to a stalling condition. If there are codes stored, follow through on their diagnosis. If there are no codes stored, you might check to see if there is a calibration update from GM that addresses this concern. If that is okay, check for any possible vacuum leaks. Then you will have to start checking for things like plugged filters, fuel and air. The IAC motor for obstructions or filth. So many things can cause this that you have to eliminate things. I would also check tune condition and the condition of the plug wires as there could be a slight misfire causing the stalling. Good luck.

Some mechanic that guy is, the 2004 cavalier has no spark plug wires, I have a 2002, and it has a integrated ignition moduel. I would first start small, check your air filter make sure its nice and clean, then, if your check engine light is on, have a diagnostic done. I know the fuel line has a pressure valve located on the fuel rail assembly, check if you have enough fuel pressure, the fuel should spray out, if it is just trickling, could be the fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter.

sounds like you may have the Gm legendary locked up torque converter this Afton happens in later models with overdrive trannys this problem needs to be checked by a qualified transmission repair shop. as fare as distributor modules go your car should not even have one. your throttle advance in 2004 was done by the CAM sensor and shift position was done by the TPS sensor you might also have a IAC malfunction but not likely since it does run without being in a gear

You might want to check your points under your distributor cap. And also their is this small module called Pextronix which permanently replaces those points so they will never have to be replaced again. Also, it could be your vacuum advance and also check your carburettor; maybe it's time for a new one.
