Do you have the impression that there are three or four genres of music played on the radio today (rap, so called "alternative", pop and country) and that most of the songs seem to follow a formula as to how they should sound, and end up sounding the same. Is the variety in styles, composition, lyrics, message, beat, guitar solos, instrumentation, dance-ability, soul etc that existed in the 1950s - 1990s music missing?

Definitely! Today, it's mostly a bunch of pointless headache-causing crap. Even some of today's supposedly Christian music is starting to sound like the stuff you hear on non-Christian stations; it's so annoying, I can't even listen to the lyrics (I turn the radio dial to a different Christian station when I hear some of the more modern stuff); even some of the lyrics aren't exactly Christian. DC Talk (not together anymore) had some fresh spins on Christian music that everyone could listen to - that just doesn't happen anymore, both in the Christian category and others like pop and rock and whatnot. It's all (most of it is) empty... absolutely no real meaning.

yes it is. Arcade Fire is the only good band that is newer. Good thing a lot of old artists are making comebacks. Imean where are the pink floyds, queens, beatles of today? even in Country! What happened when country was Johnny cash and Willie Nelson, Now its only "Big N Rich" All the bands are the same! i could turn on the radio and i woundnt be able to tell between fifty bands! its soo annoying. Oh well atleast NIN has a new album.

Rap, Popular Rock, and Popular Country are all losing originality. Try listening to something a little more 'underground'. Usually the popular crap thats played on the radio is just so boring and culturized, especially rap (which sucks to being with).

Oh my goodness yes! Almost every "new" rock band sounds like the old rock bands, it's ridiculous! We need originality for music to survive!
